Autistic Children Can be Helped with these Classroom Accommodations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) causes different kinds of learning disabilities in children. In order to help those who suffer from learning disabilities due to autism, the environment of the classroom must be altered.

In a classroom with other higher functioning kids, it can be hard for an autistic child to learn and progress. However, teachers can help these students by providing some accommodations to mitigate their learning difficulties. If classroom accommodations are provided, autism children can be helped to overcome many learning barriers and tackle education with confidence.

We’ll enunciate some important classroom accommodations that can help autistic children.

1. Daily Outlines

Autistic children mostly find it difficult to transition between tasks and activities. A daily class schedule that lists the activity categories and provides their details should be used by teachers. A class schedule can greatly assist autistic children to transition and move between activities like going to the classroom, schoolyard, lunchroom and other places.

Teachers can also assist autistic students by providing an outline with the assignment so that they may understand it better and complete it without facing trouble.

2. Alternate Media

Students with autism often face difficulty in understanding auditory or visual learning styles. Alternate media options should be available in the classroom to suit different learning styles of the autistic children. For those who don’t understand the auditory style, visuals, pictures, literature and charts can be combined to relay the information in a better way. For those who face difficulty with visual style, a recording or audio tape can be used to convey the lesson.

For those who find both auditory and visual style hard, another option is to use tactile tools for teaching. Tactile tools can include board games, flash cards, computer games, crafts projects or pads to take notes.

3. Sensory Tools

About 95% of children on autism find it difficult to regulate their sensory system. Fidgets or sensory tools can help in relieving the stress and improve the focus of these as they try to grasp knowledge in a tough environment of the classroom. The fidgets help these students in self-regulating their emotions and focus on the task assigned when distraction tries to grasp their attention.

Different kinds of sensory tools like stress balls, tangle puzzle, wiggle cushions, foot rollers and chair bands can be provided to the autistic students in the classroom to help them control their behavior.

4. Extra Breaks

School can be made smoother for autistic children by building extra breaks in the daily schedule. A break of 5 minutes after every hour can help these children transition between activities and recover after a lesson.

In addition, autistic children should be allowed to take breaks as needed since some of them are prone to meltdowns due to fatigue and sensory overload from constant pressure of learning.

The Final Word

Teachers should understand that autistic children have special needs and classroom accommodations like the ones listed above are essential to help these children progress and learn without facing trouble because of their disabilities.

In the normal learning environment, many schools don’t allow teachers to implement such accommodations as it affects other students.
