Take the Kresge Challenge!

Help The Children's Home Build on a Legacy of Excellence

When was the last time your generosity had the potential to double, triple, even quadruple it’s value? Take the Kresge Challenge today and your gift could turn into $300,000 for The Children’s Home of Cincinnati!

This incredible, hard-to-come-by challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation makes it possible for your gift to go farther than you may have ever thought possible. Here’s how:

The Kresge Foundation will award The Children’s Home with a $300,000 grant towards our Building on a Legacy of Excellence campaign to expand, upgrade, and consolidate our Madison Road facilities. However, the funds will only be received if we reach our campaign goal by May of 2010. Now more than ever, every dollar counts!

Your gift will make an immediate impact by contributing to a successful campaign, but the resulting campus improvements will have an effect for years to come. The Building on a Legacy of Excellence campaign was launched this year to raise $5 million in support of a $10 million Master Plan to provide urgently needed improvements to campus facilities and program spaces for children. Gifts totaling $3.64 million have already been secured, and the remainder is being sought in the form of gifts of all sizes from the broader community.

Ellen Katz Johnson, President & CEO of The Children’s Home, states, “ We have until May 31, 2010 to raise $1,353,961 and meet our $5 million campaign goal in order to meet the Kresge Challenge and receive their $300,000 grant. This is truly a call to action for all of our supporters. At this point, every gift of every amount matters.”

The campaign is Co-Chaired by Jim Wainscott, President & CEO of AK Steel Corporation, and his wife, Darla, a member of our Board of Trustees.

Take the Kresge Challenge today and help us to better serve the most vulnerable children in our community. Learn more about the campaign and our needs below.

To Better Serve the Most Vulnerable Children

A successful campaign will help us better serve the children who, through no fault of their own, face problems and situations well beyond their young years.

Some have experienced physical or emotional abuse and neglect. Others have been shuffled from one family and school to the next. All deal with significant social, behavioral, and learning challenges that affect their daily lives. They need and deserve professional, caring support to have a fair shot at a stable future.

Throughout our nearly 145-year history, we have continuously met the changing needs of the children in our community. Today, however, we face a serious dilemma.

At a Critical Crossroads

From 2004 to 2008, we have experienced an 89% increase in the number of children and families served. This rapid growth requires our physical structures to support the increasing demand.

Our facilities are stretched well beyond capacity and efficient operation. Our buildings are severely outdated and inappropriate for accommodating the intensive programs and services needed by the children we serve. We must upgrade, expand, and consolidate our facilities if we are to make a deep and lasting impact on the children who need us most. Without a doubt, our needs are urgent.

YOU Can Provide Children with the Environment they Deserve

Gifts of all sizes will help us reach our goal and provide the following for children:

• Additional classroom spaces to address the needs of students in grades K-7 who are not succeeding in their traditional classroom settings.

• Updated facilities for intensive day treatment, counseling, and classroom space for adolescent programs. These programs are currently operating in former residential spaces that have been retrofitted multiple times and are no longer conducive to the services needed and provided today.

• More adequate and updated space for Hope Academy, our therapeutic high school for at-risk students. Currently located in Mt. Healthy, its six buildings are now temporarily replaced by portable classroom units.

• Safer roadways, walkways, and related infrastructure to better handle the dramatic increase in use and activity over the past 25 years.  Over 300 children are transported to and from our campus each day, and driveways and parking spaces designed for a small number of cars are now used by a much larger number of school buses, passenger vans, and delivery trucks.

We Need Your Help

We need your help to meet these needs and make the solutions a reality. Please make a gift to the Building on a Legacy of Excellence campaign. Every gift, no matter the size, brings us closer to transforming vulnerable young lives in our community.
